rikm Listening to this remastered release of "Asphodel" with fresh ears I'm struck by the timelessness of it, and by how very present The Machine in the Garden still sounds in 2021, a testimony to the quality of their work and the strong songwriting behind them, a unique sound that removes them from any temporal associations and places them in their own musical sphere which always exists in the present.

All this is to say that "Asphodel" remains an excellent album in 2021 or any other year...

1.
we are lost into the fire but time is not within our minds and words expose the depth within tearing trauma deep inside searing light dancing by the lost ones inside their minds channeling madness in the dark wakeful silence holding close the masquerade dances on hidden thoughts without faces cutting through your frightened eyes the time is now, the masks collide their faces dancing without minds why we never hoped to care to see the sorrows exposed the spotlights shine on their cold stares the dust creeps inside our minds mindless forms without thought find existence outside time will they see you? they won't love you fading away
2.
will I ever be there? will they ever care? there was never a time with any meaning never a place to find a beginning the words never spoken and the past long forgotten the road never traveled and the memories now gone why don't you see them? I'm sure you know them why can't you hear them? for they are there the future never happened and the feeling displaced as if in some other light and into the dawn of the day a thought outside of time it could just go away transparent eyes look inside through to my senses these games they play I'm on the outside I feel so far away
3.
something that never happened if it hadn't begun this terrible feeling without any meaning a daylight so grim and the conscious within the future's lost in the distance never knowing their names and inside my mind the passing of time
4.
feel the water that falls down and washes me clean from all the stars of the fears that linger in my dreams I want to drive my eyes away no more to wonder taken in the hands of fate days filled with thunder here we are here we stand trapped inside this wonderland moving in circles falling around they go up but we fall down I hear you again again, again I hear you again again, again the nights drown away in stars growing deeper and colder nothing can awake my mind another year older why we always soon forget with no reason how low we are again gone with the seasons
5.
it's out of my control what you find follows something set in motion until the ends of the earth you're above it all so you'll never see the terrible mistakes you can't ever correct and take me there fly above take me away far from here
6.
do you see the brightness of the earth? and do you see the way I'm fading? I am the bird and she is within me I am the stars that you can see do you feel the winds of the day? and do you feel the sun's rays? I'm the bird and she's within me do you see the weakness in my eyes? and do you feel the shadow in my skies? can you feel that? can you feel me? cause I can feel you away, running away from me you're all running away from me far away, far from everything there is today can you feel it rain? can't you feel it rain down? feel me coming away from you you pull away, and away from me you take me away, you take me away taking me far from my place taking me close to the end of space can you feel me? feel me
7.
I am a million hues of shade a tide within me a life will change meaning be open to me before we couldn't be I would know where to go we understand I see things come apart slowly suspending time these things within the weary to drown within me
8.
it's difficult to see where you're going when the rains come with no warning my eyes are all blurry and my hands shake with fear feels like I'm drowning in a sea of myself won't someone release me what I'm seeing will not disappear it won't stop if you ask it to you can't think it away cleansed or confused
9.
fly hence, shadows, that do not keep watchful sorrows charm'd in sleep! tho' the eyes be overtaken, yet the heart doth ever waken thoughts chain'd up in busy snares of continual woes and care: love and griefs are so exprest as they rather sigh than rest. fly hence, shadows, that do not keep watchful sorrow charm'd in sleep!
10.
it seems strange the way their thoughts bang around inside stair steps up and down echo, it echoes before and after going in the wrong direction and I know we won't reach our destination in my head bring me around to the exit get me out I can't see through all around me I did this to myself all around me echo, it just echoes
11.
I cry for the things you know the things that you must say fly my soul into the air it isn't as though you don't know by now they all know and all I can do is cry these are the things we can't see places we will never go feelings we won't encounter lives we don't want to live
12.
being within the outside in a voice of my own to truly have a place worth something I've been so many places done so many things had so many dreams fought for nothing for the glory of for the silent ones I seek you for the end of for the gathered one I seek you will they ever listen do they think I can't hear them whispering? they stare at me
13.
Go wherever you are from Beneath the skin of the waves You have come from the waters In the essence of the air You are not the one who's lost For the others, they know Of the rain in your hopes In the land of the one You see all, you assume all On a rock all alone Turn away from your shame Hide your face Feelings about the way Things are around you Don't let that slip away Why not hold on?
