Nethescurial Always eclectic, and after all these years still incapable of making a bad album! If you like gothic rock, darkwave, trip hop, dream pop or coldlwave there is something here for you. Overall this album is like a beautifully melodic guided tour of hell (they have always payed too much attention to the world for happy music) culminating in a rousing battle cry! Favorite track: Resist.

Ronald Holstein what's not to love? Favorite track: Cold Storm.

zionengine "Places in Between" builds on a legacy The Machine in the Garden have (has?) honed over the past quarter-century. As for me, I could use a shot of 90's darkwave spirit right now. I recommend black velvet and blacklight to best enjoy this album at the local club AFTER the pandemic subsides. Favorite track: Spirit and Image.

rikm Nine years after their last release Summer Bowman and Roger Fracé return with an exceptionally strong new album, a collection of 13 songs that shift between styles and sounds seamlessly, fully demonstrating the immense talents and versatility of the duo.

"Places in Between" is a truly impressive return from the Machine in the Garden, new music that confirms their status as one of the best bands in the Darkwave scene...

Cold Storm 04:12
Water vapor rises around me Tendrils like fingers in my hair Coiled around my head A crown in a winter court Snow falling gently Creates a soft blanket A place to rest my head And calm a fiery soul A burning castle out of control Our kingdom entranced by fools And at the end of the day A cold storm burned An emerging fiend, slowly As if from delusions Breaks and swells in the tide Of visions and fears and lies A narrow trail forms Through the dense copse How strange could it be? To fly away and dream again The dead of night rings in my ears Quiet screaming and wary eyes Watching and moving, writhing My silence as gentle as a knife A burning castle out of control Our kingdom entranced by fools And at the end of the day A cold storm burned Rainfall hard, then gentle I see their figures in the mist A shadow in bands of light And then their eyes close

(Churning the sea of milk…) Our precious things were lost Jointly we search Gods and demons (Don’t fall away) A thousand years of war (Don’t fall away) In light I see (Don’t fall away) In dark I feel (Don’t fall away) Even now (Don’t fall away) Even now (Don’t fall away)
3.
Beyond 06:14
Come in, we’ve been waiting A circle of life and love and death Figure of myth and dreams The feeling of flight out of my own skin I turn to the north, then south, east and west Something tugs my heart within me I call to the sun above me Can they save you? Things are just beginning Secure your path ahead The depth is thicker here Where there is no air And expanding to breathe Beyond… Don’t waste your time It doesn’t matter anyway This is the end Can they save you? Things are just beginning Secure your path ahead The moon rises high above me And lights the way Burning away the blame The senses are intense Secure within the space I swim out beyond Beyond…
4.
Underneath 03:08
We reach through history Only to believe what we are told There must be some mystery Something more to behold Find yourself alone today Time passes by, we never know why A glimpse to another path A different reality Beyond the what we know Underneath a different day Than the one that I have come to know There is some other way Something else to show

Let me tell you of a time in the distant past Of a girl and a bird with knowledge vast She who knows all of beast and man Of gods and heroes throughout the land Islands far, far out to sea All alone within your tree The secret fate of all the world Ahead, foretold and unfurled Gamayun, won’t you sing your tune? Beautiful, prophetic bird Let me tell you of a time in the distant past A deity of wisdom, the die was cast Singing herself a divine melody A voice throaty and velvety Her song weaves a web of magic and fate Hard to interpret until it’s too late Who among us can comprehend? Not I, for certain, dear friend Gamayun, won’t you sing your tune? Beautiful, prophetic bird Let me tell you of a time in the distant past Of elements and nature, the world vast Sun, rain, wind, animals and birds Plants and trees, they hear her words Ancient origins and time now lost Opulence and decadence at great cost Her song now gone and dreams now hushed Wings and feathers, in the ground, crushed Gamayun, won’t you sing your tune? Beautiful, prophetic bird

Broken Days 04:04
The days are broken Nights all the same The beast has awoken Stay in your place The world is changing Things have come undone The world is shifting Still turning around The days are broken Nights all the same I’m afraid the past has spoken You can’t turn away
7.
We’re so lost And never found We live in wait Of something far beyond There’s no more A final shape Towards dreams Limiting language And though we try Try to grasp We never know What it all means Ad astra per aspera, I will find you Mors ultima linea rerum est And in the dark And in my mind There reaches a place A way to find But never again To return from there The mists that bind And dust we are Ad astra per aspera, I will find you Mors ultima linea rerum est

Hey, listen! In becoming something Does my old self cease to be Does my path yet unfold Or have I seen all there is to see Where the fallen keep me Where the temple of time Brings me to find my way With courage, power, and wisdom Three spiritual stones I find To aid me To unlock my destiny And call forth the hero in me I cannot find the right way through Help me, guide me (Hey, listen!) Where the stone dances There may be a way for me Behind and ahead A labyrinth of being Hiding a map And a compass To find a way through To the ending I’ll find the pieces Of my heart there So I bring my magic forth A song of sun I ride along To bring her home I cannot find the right way through Help me, guide me (Hey, listen!) Where the stone dances There may be a way for me Three spiritual stones I find To aid me, to unlock my destiny And call forth The hero within me

Spending time flying standby Through places where life and time are still There’s a light I find Dimly lit upon the furthest point And if I try, maybe I… Somewhere resides a path A tunnel to crawl through And if I try, maybe I… Maybe I could try Spending time painting corners Scuffs and scrapes and bridges long since burned There’s a light I find Dimly lit upon the furthest point And if I try, maybe I… Somewhere resides a path A tunnel to crawl through And if I try, maybe I… Maybe I could try It’s time to step away To spend less time fighting me Would it be the first A manifestation of a dream The apocalypse of chimera If I twist apart reality It doesn’t matter what they claim This is what I choose to be A phantom exposed within Peels away opposing power

Orbital 03:36
Look above Look to the sky As the moon rises high Our circular path Look below Look to the ground As the water trickles down Deep in the earth We are sun We are stars As we spin through the hours On and on This soul This heart There’s another way around Out beyond Soon We’ll know We alone The cosmos far

O Euchari 05:14

Find a Way 03:31
Every deed is on us Carry on with every thought Somehow we find the strength To go on There is one isolated system May the future grant us the view In a time of living history This is who we come to be There are worlds Apart from worlds Places in between We never see, we never see Far and away And in dreams The space that follows me The worlds that came to be And now I can never know Who they were Float away Find a way Float away We’ll find our way

Resist 02:58
There are no signs in the sky tonight Nothing in the air to suggest the time Is close at hand for a change A shift is ready, a new path to chart There comes a time, a time to begin And we've spent days in the wind Sometimes it's too late Too late for eyes to open There's everything wrong And nothing to be done And we watch this farce We allowed this to happen There's a time to resist A time to fight back Their roots are deep Nevertheless, we will persist Weary and defeated We take our place One among many Is all hope lost? Weary and defeated We take our place One among many Will all hope be lost? There's a time to resist A time to fight back Their roots are deep Nevertheless, we will persist

about

Thirteen new songs exploring the variety of styles—from goth rock to electronic ethereal—the band is known for. Coming in at over an hour in length, Places in Between is chock full of epic electronics, sweeping guitars and shining vocals. The album has everything fans have come to appreciate about the Machine in the Garden in their nearly 30 year history, while still sounding elevated and modern.
